Karate or karate-do meaning empty hand is a martial art of Okinawan origin. Karate is a multi-cultural development, absorbing the contributions of many gifted practitioners over time and crossing many borders. The development of Karate occurred chiefly in Okinawa and China in the 19th century, and Japan in the early 20th century.
Seido karate is a strict, traditional Japanese style of karate, into which our Grand Master Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura has distilled the essence of what he has learned about the martial arts more than 55 years of study, practice, and teaching.
Seido karate is a way of life, a way of being. It involves the training of body, mind, and spirit together in order to realize the fullness of human potential.
The physical training in Seido is strenuous, emphasizing progressive development of strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity. One of the goals of Seido karate training is to develop strong bodies, which contributes to health and a general sense of self-confidence and well-being. In addition to developing students with the highest level of physical skills, Seido aims to develop individuals of the highest moral character, individuals who can then make significant contributions to a better life in the family, the work place, and in society at large.
The Seido emblem is the five-petaled blossom of the Japanese plum tree, which is also the emblem of Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura's family.
There are three fundamental principles underlying Seido Karate: respect, love, and obedience. These are represented by the three circles within the center of the plum blossom of the Seido emblem. These principles represent a way, or do, of being in everyday life.
